Languages of Avern

With a diverse landscape, there are a set of equally diverse languages. Each species shares their own distinct language, and there are multiple human languages as well. This causes much confusion for travelers, though there is a trade tongue that gets most general ideas across. However, not all people know the trade tongue, and even if they do, may have accents that make them difficult to understand.

No matter where a person comes from, there is a basic language taught at childhood. The poorer a family is, the more likely they will only be taught their homeland's language. Traders will often learn Tradetongue, but the general people in an area rarely learn this universal language. Long lived races like Dwarves and t'Kalima may know more languages, some of which may no longer be spoken. Gods and goddesses also have their own language, though they are able to be understood if they so choose.

Gods and Goddesses

The celestial language of all the gods and goddesses is generally called Starbloom by those on Avern. It is a completely different type of language than any other, and those that hear it cannot successfully describe the sound, almost as though they cannot interpret what they've heard. Starbloom can be used as a weapon, causing hearing disruption when used at a certain decibel level.

Originating in Darna, Darnan is a language derived from the first t'Kalima who landed on the shores. It has musical tones and is much different from some of the more guttural languages like Gomesh. The standards of the hyphenated word combinations remained, while the initial letters before a word were dropped.

Darnan

A guttural language of the people in the Seran Jungle, this language has it's roots in Orc languages and Draconic languages. It combines hard consonants with softer vowel sounds. It is consider by most to be a "barbaric" language, and rather "uncouth."

Gomesh

This language is only spoken in Petra and Ruark, and even then, not as often as other languages. The language is considered the mark of a "pure" native to the area, despite the fact that the area was colonized by Darna hundreds of years before, which is why the most common language is Darnan.

Linerian

Linerian originated in Lineria almost four hundred years ago. It was a derivative of another, ancient language that the theocracy felt had become unrelatable to the current population. This change too many years, as some resisted changing their language, so the transition had to be slow. It is often spoken in surrounding areas like Dwomer and Phomean.

Deriving the name from the commonly found valerian roots in Luxen, this language is somewhat faster to speak than others. The rapid combination of words and contractions a native Valerian speak use makes the language extremely difficult to learn, especially later in life. They have man words that translate into long sentences rather than translating each word. This language is also common in the Republic of Namas and Vestern, though almost as many people there speak Darnan, or both languages.

Ka

Ka is the language of all the t'Kalima. They all share this language, having been taught since infancy. They have a complex way of writing, often talked about by humans as "nonsense writing" because they do not understand a symbol based language. Ka is written with a sentence within a shape, with the placement of the symbols as well as the shape changing the meaning. No known other species except the t'Kalima know how to write Ka.

Ka'ver

Ancient Ka is the earliest form of the language, and almost no one speaks this any longer. Only the very oldest of the elves can remember this language, and even among them, it is rare since many of the eldest have died in the wars.

Ka'tesh

Considered the "Language of the High Ones," this language is only allowed to be taught to the monarchy, leaders, and those who stand as consummate heroes to the world. It is against the laws and etiquette of the t'Kalima to teach this language to anyone outside this group, and an offense worthy of exile or death.

Sometimes just called dwarven, the official name of the dwarven language is Michath. This language is said to have come from the essence of the earth, and is handed down by the Phoenix of Earth as a gift. All dwarves are taught both Tradetongue and Linerian as well.

The interesting part of Dranae is that no one teaches it. All those born with draconic traits innately know this language. They are simply born speaking it and must be taught to speak in other languages. One of the first signs of draconic heritage is the use of Dranae. It is a boon in some places, and considered a curse in others. Dragon-blooded are found all over the continent.

Little is know of the Gnomish language, although it is somehow related to the Orc language. The language itself combines guttural growling sounds with soft, high pitched whistles that sound like bird calls. No one has yet been successful at learning this language. Generally, the Gnomes have a clan leader which speaks Tradetongue, while the others only speak Fwarwar.

Gnomes: Fwarwar

Halifast speak in the language native to their birth. It is unknown if they've ever had a language of their own, however it is rumored that they have some special way to communicate that no one who is not a Halifast can understand or know about. They are known for being tight-lipped about their own history, and it is quite possible that they have a language in their history before they started integrating with human culture.

Grotteth is the language of the orcs. Mostly spoken in the Seran Jungle, this language has snuck into other areas, and bears a strange similarity to Tradetongue. Many orcs choose to speak no other language, and are against any non-orc (even half orcs raised in their own tribes) learning their language. Any orc that leaves that leaves the tribe, either because they are leaving for someone of another race, or just from wanderlust, is told never to utter another word in Gotteth.

The language of the desert wraiths (shared by the neighboring fire-kin elves) is a language of falling sounds. Some of it comes out in puffs of air, and bits of whispered sounds. There are no soft sounds in Shushwish, and along with the quiet language, they are also taught a hand sign language from birth to communicate with others silently, and also because deafness is common among their race. Because of their enhanced senses in other areas, deaf wraiths have no disadvantage other than they only talk in hand sign.
