War for Avern

The gods of Avern struggle to make peace between their differing views in the outer planes, and on Avern, their followers do much the same. When one powerful priest begins to wage war against kingdoms using armies of the undead, what can be done except for fight back? The Keepers of Avern step up to save the fragile world they choose to protect.

In the mystical realm of Avern, a delicate balance hangs between the gods across the outer planes. Once filled with harmony, the landscape is now marred by discord as differing ideologies clash and the noble pursuit of unity falters. The deities, each embodying varying facets of existence, struggle to find common ground while their mortal worshipers grapple with the same issues.

In the middle of this, a high priestess of Ravera stands tall. Only known as “the Undead Queen” or the “Death Bringer,” she begins a war against the kingdoms of Avern, deeming the corrupt and impure. In her twisted vision, she is cleansing the world of all that is wrong with it by using the “pure” undead who do only as they are instructed and cannot be swayed from being loyal to their masters and mistresses.

Now, as the Avatar of War—a demonic creation of the god of war—is awakened and let loose on the unknowing world, and unknown numbers of the undead flood towns and cities. In response, the Keepers send their own Avatars to wield their powers and stop the threat to the balance of Avern.

The Queen of the Undead, the high priestess of Ravera, has been granted an incredible power: the ability to channel divine energy unlike anyone on Avern. This boon is given by the goddess in hopes to thwart her siblings in their attempts to maintain balance. For reasons unknown, she has left her priestess with the power to raise armies of undead, and disappeared herself so she can power her minion in secret.

To raise such an undead army and be ablet to control it, the Queen has to summon a demonic creation of Telema. This creature, the Avatar of War, brings with it the power to control massive amounts of soldiers of any kind. The followers of other gods, though, are informed of the plot to unbalance Avern, and move to stop the Queen. The question is, will they make it in time?

Avatar of War

With the summoning and capture of the Avatar of War by the Queen of the Undead, the Keepers know that they must stop this before the world of Avern burns to ash. The threat of undead creatures overrunning the world is very real, and they must decide how to proceed. Sumar, the Keeper of Death, suggests they create their own Avatars. These creations would be able to interact with the world of Avern where the Keepers could not directly intervene. It is decided that each Keeper will create their own Avatar. The process is ancient, and millennia has passed since any have done it.

Sumar creates his avatar—a fierce warrior with the very powers of death itself he gives the name of Summer. The problem is, however, the avatar, like her master, knows nothing of the world of Avern. Discovered by a small party of heroes that had been attempting to stop the Queen from summing of the Avatar of War, she quickly starts to acclimate to the world, and learn why exactly it must be saved.

Avatar of Death

With the success of Sumar’s avatar, Charin manages to craft her own avatar next. Placing him in the path of the group Summer—Sumar’s avatar—belongs to, the Earth Mother hopes to make connections of the world like Summer has done. She gives her avatar the name Sage and bids him to wield the raw power of nature as he desires.

As the group learns to deal with their new companion, the Queen of the Undead sends minions to destroy them in the guise of friends. Her intention is to destroy the heroes and the avatars from within their own group, and her success is dependent on the naïve nature of the avatars.

Avatar of Nature

Despite the difficulties the avatars and their friends face, they have made progress on fighting the minions of the Queen of the Undead. In the outer planes, the gods are on a mission to find the location of Ravera as she continues to feed power to her minion and the undead hordes she is summoning. One kingdom has fallen to their power already, and more are going to be overrun soon.

Avarin, the Keeper of Life, finishes creating her Avatar and sets him on the world of Avern. Her avatar bears the name Daybreak, and she ensures his path intersects with the other avatars. As Daybreak learns to navigate the world of Avern, old passions are reignited in young avatars. The minions of the Queen grow closer to them as they hurry to find a way to summon the only thing that will stop the conflict for good.

Avatar of Life

With the twilight, Kalimorne’s avatar awakens. Astara, a perfected creation of the Keeper of Magic, is given to the world of Avern with powers over the spheres of magic unlike anyone has ever seen. Imbued with limited prophecy, she is also able to foresee possibilities. Naïve about the actual day to day of Avern, though, she has trouble dealing with people when she meets them. Soon, though, the party of the avatars finds her, guided by the stars themselves to the location of the singular Astara.

With all four avatars, the party of heroes is sure they should be able to do what is necessary to bring an end to the conflict. They try to figure out the best way to get to the place where legend says they can summon the creature they need, a powerful creation called the Avatar of Peace, created by the goddess Briasha—the great healer and angel of the heavens. They have their work ahead of them because the forces of the Queen of the Undead know of their plan, and intend to stop them.

Avatar of Magic

Briasha created the Avatar of Peace to quell great wars that occurred on Avern. She sleeps, though, in an unknown location. The heroes and avatars much find this location, and the key to summoning her. Armed with the knowledge of how the Avatar of War was unlocked, they believe they can understand how to do it. The avatars fear that without someone severing the link between Ravera and the Queen of the Undead, nothing will matter in the end, and the war will continue until all of Avern is destroyed.
